Dear Prime Minister,

We want to express our grave concerns about your remarks you have reportedly made on caesarean births and abortions. According to credible Turkish and international media reports you have stated on two occasions that you "consider abortion to be murder", that "no one should have the right to allow this to happen" and that "we have to be more sensitive to this issue." We, Members of the European Parliament, strongly differ with you on this sensitive ethical issue and would like to ask for a further clarification of your stanceand that of the Turkish government on these sensitive but very important issues.

In addition to these remarks it has also been reported that the Turkish Health Minister, Mr Recep Akdag, has announced to propose a draft law next month that would restrict or ban abortions in Turkey. We express our grave concerns about this possible legislative proposal which in our view would violate Turkish women's fundamental rights of habeas corpus, freedom of religion and conscience and the rights to privacy, equality and to have a healthy and fulfilling live. We aspire to get these fundamental rights globally duly reflected in abortion regulation as stated in the European Parliament's report of 5 March 2012 on "equality between women and men in the European Union". We also fear that a restrictive measure on abortion entails the risk to force women to use primitive methods which could increase maternal mortality.

Last week's mass protests in cities throughout Turkey show that the current Turkish law, allowing for abortions until the 10th week after conception, enjoys popular support in Turkish society. A research poll conducted by Konsensus has indicated that a majority of those questioned said they oppose the announced ban. We call on you to respect Turkish women's fundamental rights and to refrain from introducing legal restrictions on caesarean births and abortions.

Sincerely,
